HEAVY rains and stormy weather left many homes flooded and without electricity on Thursday evening.

A Lethabo Park resident said his mother's shanty was underwater, where her furniture, belongings and fridge were damaged.

A member of the public reported that the wall at the Galeshewe stadium had collapsed during the storm.

Spokesperson for Sol Plaatje municipality added that all areas affected by power outages, including Galeshewe, Roodepan, Diskobolos and other areas would be attended to once the rain had subsided.

He indicated that repair work on the Homevale extension power unit on the corner of 14th and 19th streets was also disrupted by the stormy weather.

The area had been affected by a temporary power outage since Tuesday at around 1am after the Ring Main Unit was vandalised. The body of a 21-year-old man was found inside the unit after he was electrocuted.

Mothibi stated that while the electricity connection was planned to be restored on Thursday

"Our electricians installed a new Ring Main Unit (RMU), and several high-tension faults were repaired. Two more high-tension joints will be finalised soon."

He indicated that the waterlogged condition made it difficult for electricians to complete their work.

"Repair work had to be temporarily halted due to heavy rains, which resulted in waterlogged trenches dug for the high tension cable prepared to energise the Ring Main Unit at 14th Street.

"Water will be drained from the system to allow work to resume smoothly and to be completed; the high tension joints on the distribution cable from HA Morris substation to the newly installed Ring Main Unit at 14th Street."

Mothibi said that work would resume immediately once the conditions allowed.

More rain is expected on Friday afternoon, although the rest of the weekend is predicted to be partly cloudy and warm on Saturday and sunny on Sunday.

There is a 40 percent chance of rain on Monday and a 55 percent chance of rainy weather predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to rise into the early to mid-30s Celsius for the remainder of the week.
