Kimberley station commander Brigadier Nicholas Mtongana led a multi‑agency operation, Operation Shanela 2 on December 9, aimed at bolstering safety operations during the Safer Festive Season.
The initiative brought together units from Kimberley, Galeshewe and Kagisho SAPS, the Tactical Response Team, Flying Squad, District Office, Pro‑Active Policing Unit, Sol Plaatje Municipal Traffic Services, the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Correctional Services.
The operation kicked off with a parade addressed by Brigadier Mtongana, who acted as overall operational commander.
A vehicle checkpoint was set up on the R64 Boshoff Road, where 48 vehicles and 65 persons were screened. Traffic enforcement resulted in fines that were issued to the amount of R3,400.
During the course of the day, a 46‑year‑old man was arrested at the Samaria informal settlement for suspected drug dealing. Police seized drugs and cash believed to be proceeds of crime. In addition, unlicensed liquor outlets selling concoctions were closed in Platfontein, and further fines were issued.
Ten undocumented individuals were also arrested and detained pending further processing.
The operation underscores the Kimberley SAPS’s commitment to a safer festive season through coordinated policing and community partnership.
