A Loeriesfontein man was sentenced to 22 years for rape and theft in the Regional Court in Calvinia.

The Calvinia regional court convicted and sentenced a 32‑year‑old man, Bronwin Hilton Swart, to an effective term of 22 years’ imprisonment for rape and theft on December 8,
Swart received 20 years for the rape of a 25‑year‑old woman and an additional two years for theft.
The offences occurred on November 19 2023 between approximately 3:10am and 7.45am.
The victim had left a business establishment after a night out in Loeriesfontein when she encountered Swart, who accompanied her to her residence.
After the victim lost consciousness, she later discovered she had been sexually assaulted and her cellphone was missing. The matter was promptly reported to the South African Police Service, leading to Swart’s arrest.
Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended Detective Constable Anthony Willemse of the Calvinia Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for his meticulous investigation.
She also praised the strong collaboration between the investigating officer and the prosecution, which ensured the successful conviction and incarceration of the perpetrator for crimes committed against women.
