THE SOUTH African National Defence Force (SANDF) successfully hosted the annual South African Air Defence Artillery Formation (SAADA) Gun Run on December 10, uniting military and civilian teams in a demanding test of endurance and collaboration. Organised by the 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment based in Kimberley, the event kicked off at 9am at the Trim Park under clear, hot Diamond City skies.
As part of a week-long celebration of excellence in the SA Army Air Defence Artillery Formation from December 8 to 12, the Gun Run highlighted the week's activities, which also included a Medal Parade, Memorial Service, and awards ceremony for exceptional members.
Ten teams competed, each pulling a 23mm anti-aircraft gun across an estimated 7.2 kilometres of challenging terrain. Participants represented diverse groups, including the SANDF, South African Police Services, the Department of Correctional Services, and local community teams from Galeshewe, who defended their championship title earned in 2019.
The soldiers and participants demonstrated remarkable teamwork as they navigated the heavy 23mm anti-aircraft gun through the winding roads and bustling central business district (CBD) of Kimberley.
The physical strain was intensified by the Kimberley sun, which reached a sweltering 29 degrees Celsius by 10.30am, testing the resolve of all involved.

The SAADA Gun Run boasts a rich history as an annual tradition in Kimberley, dating back to around 2000, with the 20th edition held in 2019 at the Oppenheimer Gardens. Over the years, it has evolved into a symbol of unity, drawing teams from various sectors to promote camaraderie and community engagement.
This year's event continued that legacy, emphasising military prowess while raising awareness about gender-based violence and supporting the Men-For-Change Organisation, a key partner in fostering positive community change.
At the end of the day, when the times were checked and verified, the results were announced.
In third place was the 3 South African Infantry Battalion (3 SAI), with Galeshewe Community Team 1 taking second. The winners of the day were 104 Battery (10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment).
The Gun Run not only showcased physical endurance but also highlighted the importance of inter-agency co-operation in building a safer society.
