THE POLICE in Upington have arrested three men, aged 42, 47 and 48, after they were allegedly found in possession of a rhino horn on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

According to police spokespersons, members of the ZF Mgcawu Highway Patrol and the Task Team received information about a vehicle believed to be transporting a rhino horn to Upington. Officers intercepted the vehicle on the N14 shortly before it reached the town.

During the search, police recovered a rhino horn, a pistol and ammunition. The occupants were unable to provide a lawful explanation for the items and were immediately arrested. The vehicle, believed to have been used in the commission of the crime, was also impounded.

The trio are expected to appear in court soon, facing charges, including rhino poaching and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The District Commissioner of ZF Mgcawu, Major General Monica Sebili, commended the swift response by the members, which led to the apprehension of suspects. "The police reaffirm the commitment towards creating a safe environment for all inhabitants during this festive season," she said.

Police discovered a rhino horn, a pistol, and ammunition, which the occupants of the vehicle could not account for.
