THE NORTHERN Cape Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) has handed over 61 houses to beneficiaries in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, as part of the R1 Billion Housing Project.
MEC Bentley Vass, joined by local dignitaries, presented the keys to beneficiaries across four villages in the Joe Morolong Local Municipality. The handovers included Madibeng (10), Perth (10), Lotlhakajaneng, and Segwaneng (41).
Vass said, "Today marks an important milestone for the people of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District. The 61 houses we handed over reflect our commitment to fast-tracking human settlements delivery across the province.
"Every completed house restores dignity, provides security and comfort, and represents a tangible improvement in the lives of our people."
An 83-year-old beneficiary, Ms Kelebogile Griet Olyn, in Madibeng village, expressed her excitement, saying, "This has been a lifelong dream to own a properly built house, and to move out of this mud-house, that was always posing serious danger to my life and well-being."

Joe Morolong Local Municipality mayor Dineo Leutlwetse-Tshabalala expressed her gratitude, saying, "This is what co-operative governance ought to look like, in that all the three spheres of government work in tandem for the benefit of our people, especially the poor and those based in rural areas. We continue to call on the Department of Coghsta to ensure that all other houses are completed so that we hand over the keys to more beneficiaries in the new year."
The department's approach is to hand over completed houses as soon as they are ready, to avoid vandalism, while work continues to build the rest of the houses at each project.
