A 21-YEAR-OLD foreign national was handed a suspended sentence after being convicted of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman in Kimberley.

The incident, which took place on April 20 this year, at a business establishment in De Beers, has raised significant awareness about safety in public spaces.

The victim reported the incident after the accused attempted to embrace her before touching her indecently upon her arrival at the shop. Acting swiftly, the victim opened a case, resulting in the immediate arrest of the assailant. The thorough investigation carried out by Detective Sergeant Moreetsiemang Mogakwe of Kimberley’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit proved vital in securing a conviction.

On December 3, the Kimberley Magistrate's Court sentenced the offender to a fine of R6,000 or 18 months imprisonment. Furthermore, he received an additional six-month prison term, suspended for five years, alongside a declaration of unfitness to possess a firearm.

The Frances Baard District Police management commended Sergeant Mogakwe’s diligence throughout this case.
