A YEAR after the launch of an in-school breakfast programme in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, partners and funders are celebrating its positive impact on learners and attendance. The programme, serving approximately 4,500 young learners in and around Kuruman, is a collaborative effort between Kathu Solar Power, the Tiger Brands Foundation, and the Department of Basic Education.
During a recent visit to participating schools, principals shared how the programme has improved learner attendance, punctuality, concentration, and overall well-being, particularly for children facing socio-economic challenges.
"This breakfast programme has not only benefitted the learners in terms of starting the day on a non-empty stomach, but it also encourages learners to attend school early and regularly, and it has also assisted, encouraged and motivated even learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to cope with their everyday morning school activities," said the principal of Bankhara-Bodulong Primary School, BG Magome.
The programme provides highly nutritious, fortified porridges made from sorghum, maize, or oats, prepared in clean, well-equipped kitchens by trained food handlers. Each learner receives their own plate and utensils, allowing them to enjoy their meal with dignity.
The porridges meet World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations for optimal micronutrient levels, addressing key health challenges in vulnerable communities.
Kathu Solar Park and the Tiger Brands Foundation said they remain committed to supporting learner well-being, strengthening educational outcomes, and ensuring every child begins the school day with the nutrition they need to thrive. The programme complements the National School Nutrition Programme, which supports learners in quintile 1-3 schools across the country.
The success of the programme is a testament to the power of collaboration and partnership in making a positive impact on the lives of learners in and around Kuruman.
