THE Kimberley Regional Court recently sentenced Collin Mahooa, 39, to 10 years’ direct imprisonment for violently attacking his wife in Roodepan by assaulting her with his fists and strangling her on January 20.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Northern Cape spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the accused was found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), in terms of the Domestic Violence Act.

"The accused was swiftly arrested after the wife reported the incident to the South African Police Service (SAPS)."

He indicated that the accused pleaded guilty in the face of overwhelming evidence presented by state prosecutor Mpho Khonkhobe.

"The court imposed a severe sentence of 10 years’ direct imprisonment, underscoring the judiciary’s commitment to treating domestic violence as a serious and unforgivable offence. The NPA reaffirms its unwavering stance against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). “Pleading guilty does not absolve perpetrators from accountability. The NPA will persistently and relentlessly pursue justice to protect victims and ensure offenders are duly sentenced," Senokoatsane said.

Chief prosecutor responsible for the Kimberley Cluster in the Northern Cape Division of the NPA, Advocate Keageletse Ilanga, stated that the NPA remained committed to supporting survivors of domestic violence and ensuring that perpetrators face the full might of the law.
