A WEDDING reception will soon be held to celebrate the historic first same-sex marriage that was officiated in Barkly West last week.

The Department of Home Affairs confirmed that this was the first gay marriage to be recorded in Barkly West.

The couple - Thamsana Moses “Tamia” Khetshane-Gailele and Goiloe Abram “Abby” Gailelle made the marriage official at the Department of Home Affairs on November 19 and are planning a traditional ceremony in Barkly West.

Tamia, a linkage officer at LoveLife South Africa, said they had known each other for five years and decided to tie the knot on his birthday.

“We met when Goiloe came to Barkly West for a construction project, and he remained here when the work was completed. It was love at first sight. I met my partner’s family in Thaba Nchu, and my family immediately gave their blessing.”

Tamia stated that their marriage was widely accepted by the community, although the stigma and ostracisation of LGQBTI individuals still existed.

“I identify as a female and prefer to be given a gender neutral title instead of Mr or Mrs. My mother was the first person who realised that I was gay. She called me baby girl and understood that I preferred to play with dolls instead of cars. However, I only realised when I was much older that I was gay, as I was never interested in dating girls. My husband has two children from a previous relationship, so we may consider adopting one more child in the future.”
