AS SHOPPERS prepare to take advantage of the "Black Friday Discount Shopping" period, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape is urging consumers to remain vigilant and alert at all times.

According to SAPS, this period often sees an increase in robberies occurring at or near ATMs, and the public is advised to adhere to the following safety tips:

  1. Have your bank card ready before approaching the ATM
  2. If you notice any suspicious individuals near the ATM, do not proceed with the transaction
  3. Remain alert and aware of your surroundings throughout the entire transaction
  4. Always shield the keypad when entering your PIN, even if you are alone
  5. Never accept assistance from strangers at an ATM; seek help inside the bank if needed
  6. Avoid withdrawing large sums of cash
  7. Secure your money immediately after withdrawing it, and avoid displaying cash openly
  8. Refrain from using ATMs located in secluded areas with no visible security
  9. Always remove your receipt after completing a transaction
  10. Where possible, be accompanied by another person, especially elderly or vulnerable individuals
  11. Consider withdrawing cash inside supermarkets, as this reduces the risk of being targeted
  12. Carry as little cash as possible and make use of alternative banking methods, such as cell phone or internet banking
  13. When leaving an ATM, be alert to the possibility of being followed. If you suspect this, proceed to a police station or a well-lit and busy area

SAPS is also warning shoppers to be cautious when making online purchases, saying, "Always exercise extreme caution when purchasing goods online. Always use reputable sites and verify details. Never share your banking details. Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true."

"SAPS appeals to communities to work together with law enforcement in the fight against crime to ensure a safer and crime-free festive season for all," said Sergeant Molefi Shemane, SAPS spokesperson.

Shoppers can contact Sergeant Shemane on 071 310 9507 for more information or to report any suspicious activity.
