THE SAPS in the Northern Cape have conducted a series of compliance inspections at tuck shops in Kimberley, resulting in the confiscation of six "Chinese Roulette" machines valued at approximately R60,000.

The inspections, which took place on Tuesday, November 25, were led by Lieutenant Colonel Norman Sey from Provincial Firearms, Liquor and Second Hand Goods, and involved various SAPS components and stakeholders, including the Northern Cape Provincial Gambling Board and Sol Plaatje Municipality.

The operation was initiated after a search warrant was issued for various tuck shops suspected of providing a platform for illegal gambling. The machines were seized from shops in Roodepan, West End, and other areas in Kimberley, dealing a significant blow to the illegal gambling operations in the area.

Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe, Corporate Communication Northern Cape, stated that the inspections are part of the #SaferFestiveSeason operations aimed at ensuring adherence to applicable laws and regulations. "The SAPS remains committed to combating illegal gambling and ensuring that our communities are safe and free from the negative impacts of such activities," Litabe said.

Report illegal gambling

No arrests were made during the operation, but an inquiry docket has been registered for further investigation. The SAPS has urged members of the public to report any information related to illegal gambling to the authorities, assuring them that all information will be treated confidentially.

The Northern Cape Provincial Gambling Board has also welcomed the SAPS operation, stating that it is a step in the right direction towards eradicating illegal gambling in the province. The Board has pledged to continue working with the SAPS to ensure that those involved in illegal gambling are brought to justice.

The confiscation of the machines is expected to have a significant impact on the illegal gambling operations in Kimberley, and the SAPS has warned that it will continue to conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with the law.
