A dispute over a cigarette between an elderly man and a younger suspect resulted in the fatal stabbing of 56-year-old Johan Malieke.

A DE AAR man has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars for the fatal stabbing of 56-year-old Johan Malieke during an argument over a cigarette earlier this month.
The incident happened on Thursday, November 14, at about 9.15pm in Malaykamp, Sunrise, where Malieke was stabbed during an altercation with 43-year-old Jannie Booysen.
Police were called to the scene and Booysen was arrested shortly afterwards. He made several court appearances before being convicted in the De Aar Regional Court on Monday, November 24. He received 10 years’ direct imprisonment for murder.
Pixley Ka Seme District Commissioner, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, praised the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Lungile Malumla of the Sunrise Detectives, for the “thorough investigation” that secured a conviction and “removed a violent offender from the streets”.
