THE SAPS management in the Namakwa District has expressed relief following the conviction of Dominic “Dompas” Jansen, 27, who has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for the murder of a local resident. The outcome, welcomed by the community, underscores the diligent efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors to secure justice for the victim’s family.

The Regional Court’s decision, delivered on November 20, reflects the gravity of the crime, which occurred on April 6, 2024. At the time, Jansen was staying at the victim’s home when an intoxicated altercation escalated into a brutal assault. The court heard how he severely assaulted the victim, inflicting injuries that would prove fatal.

After the incident, Jansen fled in the victim’s vehicle, which he later overturned. Police responding to the crash scene arrested him.

The victim was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries eight days later, marking a devastating loss for his family and the Sutherland community.

The investigation, led by Warrant Officer Elton Klein of the Sutherland Detective Branch, was pivotal in securing the conviction. State prosecutor Darryl Bromkamp was also commended for his role in the successful prosecution.

As part of the sentence, Jansen was declared unfit to possess a firearm, reflecting the seriousness with which the court viewed the offence. The community hopes the conclusion of the case will bring some measure of closure to the family and serve as a reminder of the consequences of violence.
