NORTHERN Cape Department of Health officials have been released on bail of R5,000 each in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court in connection with a R13.9 million personal protective equipment (PPE) tender that was awarded to Asijiki Soundbytes (Pty) Ltd during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The officials include the former head of department (HOD), who was the acting accounting officer during the commission of the alleged crime, Dr Dion Garvy Theys, 58; the chief financial officer, Daniel Gaborone; deputy director of finance, Victor Nyokong, 43; supply chain management director, Siyabolela Booi, 53; and the director of Asijiki Soundbytes, Donald Fungile Solani, 51.

Hawks Northern Cape spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Tebogo Thebe said the accused were charged with fraud, corruption, money laundering and contravening the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

“The Northern Cape Department of Health suffered a loss of R13.9 million. The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team served nine suspects and one company with J50 warrants of arrest on November 20. The case was referred to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) for criminal investigation,” he said.

Thebe added that Theys was recently convicted in another matter involving contravention of the PFMA, which was also successfully investigated by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit.

The matter was postponed until March 23, 2026.
