The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Namakwa District has taken a strong stance against drunk driving, arresting four individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol during the past week.
The arrests were made during high-visibility patrols and roadblocks conducted across the district as part of the ongoing Safer Festive Season Operation.
According to Namakwa District Commissioner, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, the police are determined to curb reckless and negligent driving, particularly during the festive period when traffic volumes increase. "Driving under the influence is not only illegal – it is deadly," Brigadier Andrews warned. "Every time someone gets behind the wheel intoxicated, they endanger not only their own life but the lives of innocent road users."
Brigadier Andrews emphasised that the SAPS will not tolerate such behaviour in the district and that those who choose to break the law will face the full might of the law. He urged community members to act responsibly and report any suspected drunk drivers or other criminal activities to the nearest police station or via the SAPS Crime Stop number, 08600 10111, or the MySaps app.
The SAPS remains committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors in the Namakwa District during the festive season and beyond. Members of the public can rest assured that the police are working tirelessly to keep the roads safe and hold those who put others at risk accountable for their actions.
The arrests serve as a warning to all would-be offenders that the SAPS is serious about cracking down on drunk driving and other forms of reckless behaviour. By working together with the community, the police can create a safer environment for everyone.
