A 39-year-old man, Thabiso Juel Sekamoeng, has been handed a 25-year prison sentence for the murder of his girlfriend, Lerato Cathrine Ntaolang, in Dithakong village earlier this year. The Northern Cape High Court, sitting in Kathu, heard that the incident occurred on January 11, 2025, when an argument ensued between the couple at Sekamoeng's residence.
During the altercation, Sekamoeng struck Ntaolang on the head with a sharp object and fled the scene, leaving her in a pool of blood. Emergency Medical Services personnel later declared Ntaolang deceased at the scene.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, welcomed the lengthy prison sentence, reiterating the need for communities to break the silence on gender-based violence.
"Communities need to break the silence on gender-based violence to prevent the unnecessary loss of lives and ensure that perpetrators face the full might of the law," Lieutenant General Otola said.
Detective Constable Lucky Mabuthwane, who investigated the case, was commended for his thorough investigation and dedication, which ensured the swift finalisation of the case. Sekamoeng was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The sentence serves as a stern warning to perpetrators of gender-based violence in the Northern Cape, emphasising that such crimes will not be tolerated.
