AS MATRIC finals kick off, many learners are feeling the heat. Late nights, mounting stress, and anxiety are all part of the experience. But don’t panic — you’ve made it this far, and you’re more capable than you think.

According to Peggy Maphanga, education and community skills manager at Anglo American, “We believe that the greatest investment we can make in our country’s future is to give our children access to high-quality education. Education plays a significant role in improving people’s lives by helping to address South Africa’s triple challenges of poverty, inequality, and unemployment.”

So, how can you survive — and even thrive — during the matric finals?

Study smart, not just hard

  • Create a study timetable to focus on one subject at a time. Break your subjects into manageable chunks and commit to a daily schedule.
  • Past papers are your secret weapon. They reveal patterns, teach you about different styles of questioning, and help you manage exam time effectively. Practise them under exam conditions to learn to pace yourself.
  • Your memory will only take you so far – understanding, especially in subjects like Maths and Science, is what carries you through. Use active recall – quiz yourself, teach a friend, or write summaries from memory. When you can explain something to someone else, you truly know it.
  • Know what study method works best for you – some prefer making notes or mind maps. Stick to what you're comfortable with and what works best for you.

Take care of your brain and your body

Those all-night cramming sessions? They're working against you. Study in focused 45-60 minute blocks with short breaks in between. Your brain needs time to process and consolidate information.

Sleep is non-negotiable. A well-rested mind remembers faster and thinks more clearly. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

Fuel yourself properly with healthy food and plenty of water. Eating the correct foods is vital as it directly impacts brain function, energy levels, and mood, all of which are critical for effective learning.

Save the sugary snacks and energy drinks for your celebration party at the end.

Exam day tips

  • Pack everything you need the night before – ID, stationery, watch.
  • Arrive early to settle your nerves.
  • Read every instruction carefully and start with questions you know.
  • Above all, stay calm. You've put in the work, so trust your preparation. Now is the time to show what you're capable of.

You’ve got this! Trust yourself, stay focused, and you’ll be celebrating your success in no time.
