The Speaker Dipuo Peters has called on expectant mothers to seek professional medical assistance if they wish to terminate their pregnancies and not to resort to illegal abortions.
This follows after the foetus of a boy was discovered at Gogga pump station in Galeshewe on October 18 at around 2pm.
Municipal workers indicated that foetuses were discovered at the sewage treatment plant regularly.
Peters was shocked at how a mother could discard an unborn child in this callous manner.
"People need to be educated. If they do not want their baby, they should go to the hospital and seek assistance or consider putting the baby up for adoption. It is inhumane to flush a foetus or baby down a manhole. It is very painful - where are their consciences?"
She was concerned that the pump station was switched off for over two hours on Saturday while the scene was attended to, whereby sewage blockages could arise.
She indicated that the station had one plant that was operating and that she wanted the entire pump station to be operating at full capacity.
"It was not functioning at all during December 2024 when I arrived at the Sol Plaatje Municipality, where there were countless complaints about sewage. Members of the public must desist from throwing foreign objects in the system, a this causes a lot of problems. Items such as plastic and condoms are particularly problematic."
ANC councillor Casper Rammutle said he would assist in searching for the mother of the unborn child.
"There are other options available. I do not agree with what happened. Parents who are responsible for aborting their children and discarding them should be prosecuted."
The Speaker Dipuo Peters, ANC councillors, Casper Rammutle and Nomizizi Maputle, along with Sol Plaatje officials, SAPS members and emergency personnel attended to the scene where a foetus was found at Gogga pump station.
