A SHOCKING discovery was made at the Gogga Pump Station in Kimberley on Saturday afternoon when a plant operator found a foetus during a routine maintenance procedure.
According to a statement issued by the Sol Plaatje Municipality, the operator had stopped the plant to clean the screen — which removes debris such as rags and plastics from wastewater — when the remains were found. “As the water flow subsided, the operator discovered the foetus. The matter was immediately reported to the supervisor, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) was notified,” the municipality said.
The incident prompted the shutdown of the plant, which temporarily affected operations and caused minor sewage flow disruptions in the surrounding area. Residents near the Gogga Pump Station were warned they might experience sewage spillage or flow pushbacks while the system stabilised. The plant was restored to full operation later that afternoon, around 5pm.
The municipality expressed its “deep sadness” over the discovery of the foetus and urged community members — particularly pregnant women in crisis — to seek help and support. “The Department of Social Development provides a range of services, including psychosocial support, adoption advice and services, assistance with substance abuse, gender-based violence, and support for women and children in distress,” the statement read.
Those in need of assistance can visit their nearest Department of Social Development office or call the provincial office on 053 874 9100. Crisis support is also available through the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre at 0800 428 428, or by sending a “Please Call Me” to *120*7867#. Persons with disabilities can send an SMS with the word “help” to 31531.
