In the quiet streets of Zone B in Ikhutseng, Warrenton, lives a woman whose life story stretches across more than a century. Mrs. Dithwele Wilheminah Moeng, known to her family and friends as “Gogo Wilheminah,” will celebrate her 105th birthday on Thursday, October 23 2025.

Sitting comfortably at home, Gogo Wilheminah shares her story with the DFA.

“I was born on 23 October 1920 in Platberg, in the Boshof district,” she says. “Life was simple back then. We didn’t have electricity or fancy things, but we had each other. People cared, helped one another, and shared what little they had. We played outside, helped our parents, and respected everyone in the village.”

Her memories drift back to her childhood games, long days filled with laughter and songs.

“I remember playing maketo and mantlonyana with my friends,” she said. “We would sing, laugh, and forget that we didn’t have much.

"Life was peaceful, and there was love all around us.”

Over the years, Gogo Wilheminah tells of how she has watched the world change in ways she never imagined.

“Today there are schools, electricity, television, and phones everywhere,” she says. “In my time, we walked far to fetch water or go to the shops. Young people now have so many opportunities.

"Things are easier, but sometimes I think people have forgotten to appreciate the small things.”

A Family That Keeps Her Young

Mrs. Moeng was married to the late Christian, or Crisjan, as everyone called him, on 20 June 1976. Together, they built a big, loving family that continues to fill her home with laughter and joy.

“I am blessed with nine children, 20 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren,” she says proudly. “My family is my biggest blessing. I thank God every day for keeping us all together.”

Her home in Warrenton is more than a place to live; it’s a gathering point for family, friends, and neighbours.

“I love people,” she says. “We look after one another here. The church has also been a big part of my life. I always told my children to go to church and respect God.”

Lessons from a Long Life

When asked about the secret to her long and happy life, her answer is simple but powerful.

“Listen to your parents and elders,” she said firmly. “Work hard, stay humble, and love one another. Help others and show respect to everyone you meet. Obedience and kindness will take you far in life.”

Her journey, however, was not always easy. As a young girl, she never had the chance to go to school. Instead, she began working at an early age as a domestic worker at Chris Esbie’s Driehoek Farm.

“Life was hard, but I worked with honesty and earned respect,” she recalls. “Losing my parents and husband was painful, but I stayed strong and trusted God to carry me through.”

A Heart Full of Gratitude

As her 105th birthday approaches, Gogo Wilheminah says that her heart is filled with gratitude and peace.

“I am thankful to God for giving me such a long life,” she said. “I never thought I would live to see this age. I’m happy to still be with my family, but I think I’m ready to meet my Maker now.”

Her family is preparing to celebrate the milestone with joy and thanksgiving, not just for her long life, but for the love and wisdom she continues to share with everyone around her.

“It means so much to my family,” she said. “They are proud and thankful that I’ve lived this long. It brings them joy to see me healthy and happy. We’ll celebrate together, as one.”

When asked how she wants to be remembered, she answered: “I hope people remember me as someone who respected others, worked hard, and loved her family,” she said. “I also hope they remember my singing. I love to sing, “Ha le mpotsa tshepo yaka.”

As she prepares to turn 105, Warrenton’s beloved granny remains a symbol of faith, kindness, and unity. Her story reminds us all of what truly matters: love, respect, and the simple joy of living life surrounded by family.

Happy birthday, Gogo Wilheminah.
