THE NORTHERN Cape Department of Roads and Public Works has issued a warning to motorists after a sinkhole developed on the N12 national road.

Department spokesperson Zandisile Luphahla said on Tuesday that the sinkhole was located approximately 21.9 kilometres from Britstown and 53.1 kilometres from Strydenburg.

He explained that one lane had been closed due to ongoing excavation work.

“A Stop-and-Go traffic control system is in place to ensure the safety of road users. Repair work is under way, and the contractor has begun addressing the issue,” Luphahla said.

He urged motorists to proceed with caution, adhere to traffic signage and expect possible delays while travelling through the affected area.

“Your patience and co-operation are appreciated as work continues to restore the road to safe driving conditions,” he added.
