The District Commissioner of Pixley Ka Seme, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, commended the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for securing guilty verdicts in two separate child abuse cases.
The first case unfolded on Tuesday, 8 October 2024. The court heard that a 14-year-old girl was at home with her mother and uncle when a verbal dispute erupted. In a turn of events, the suspect escalated the argument into a physical assault, using an electric cord to strike the victim, followed by kicking and punching her. It was only through the intervention of a nearby community member that the violent attack was halted.
After the incident, the victim was taken to a local clinic for urgent medical care. The gravity of the situation prompted the timely reporting to the police, resulting in the swift arrest of the perpetrator, who was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
In a separate case, the parents of a 15-year-old girl grew increasingly alarmed by their daughter’s unusual behaviour throughout 2024. Upon further inquiry, they were devastated to learn that she had engaged in a sexual relationship with a 43-year-old man. The man was arrested and charged with statutory rape.
Both accused were convicted by the Carnarvon Magistrate’s Court and received suspended sentences.
Major General Mtukushe specially recognised the exemplary efforts of Detective Constable Dineo Potjeng and Detective Warrant Officer Jacobus Fritz, noting their dedication and the expeditious resolution of each case.
In her remarks, she emphasised the paramount importance of fostering an environment free of abuse and violence, where children can thrive in safety and security. “We must do everything within our power to protect our children from all forms of abuse,” she stated.
“It is our collective responsibility to nurture a community where they feel safe and supported.”
