A REPORT from community members and the intervention of social workers in Jan Kempdorp regarding allegations of child neglect and abuse, reported on February 21, 2023, led to the conviction of a father in court.

An investigation was immediately initiated, and the case was assigned to the Hartswater SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

Upon receiving the docket for further investigation, the mother and stepfather fled with the children to Reddersburg in the Free State. However, social workers in the Free State located the children and placed them under care and protection.

Both parents, aged 32, were traced and arrested on November 9, 2023, in Reddersburg. They appeared in court, where bail was successfully opposed until the conclusion of the trial.

On October 1, 2025, the Hartswater Regional Court convicted the stepfather of common assault. He faced a sentence of one year and six months in prison, which was wholly suspended for five years, meaning he would serve no time unless he commits another offence during that period. Additionally, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be registered with the National Register for Sex Offenders.

In a separate judgment, the mother was acquitted of all charges.

The South African Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting the abuse of women and children, showcasing the steadfast dedication of members like Detective Sergeant Nlathi. His diligence played a key role in ensuring that justice was served for the children at the centre of this distressing case.
