MILNER Street in Kimberley was the scene of heightened activity on Monday afternoon when a fire broke out at a home in the usually peaceful road.

Plumes of smoke billowed from the roof as passers-by stopped to make sense of the events unfolding before them. Initial reports suggest that the fire broke out shortly before 4pm.

One eyewitness at the scene said that he had first noticed smoke coming from the roof “about 10 minutes ago”. He then contacted the fire department, which arrived at the scene within a few minutes.

Concerned residents in the street watched as the members of the fire department gained access to the property by cutting the locks on the gate. No one is believed to have been in the house at the time, but this has yet to be confirmed.

This is a developing story.

By late afternoon the fire had been extinguished, but there was considerable damage to the house. The fire department was still on the scene, ensuring that the fire did not flare up again.
