The Kimberley Regional Court has handed down a 10-year direct prison sentence to 51-year-old Thomas Gundry for the murder of his 31-year-old partner, Katriena Buffel.

The tragic incident occurred between 20 and 21 June 2015 in Delportshoop, where Buffel’s body was discovered showing visible bruises and a swollen face.

Gundry, who was the last person seen with Buffel alive, was arrested and charged with murder after investigations linked him to the crime. The court convicted him of murder, and in addition to his prison sentence, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Brigadier Nicholas Mtongana, Acting District Commander of the Frances Baard District, praised Detective Sergeant Raphael Khoboko for his diligent investigation, saying it ensured the successful prosecution and incarceration of the accused.
