THE DE AAR Regional Court has sentenced 39-year-old Alfred Mateta to 40 years’ direct imprisonment for two separate rape cases he committed in Sunrise, De Aar, during 2019.

The first incident occurred on August 25, 2019, when an 18-year-old female victim was raped multiple times by the accused after being accosted on her way home. The second incident took place on November 30, 2019, when a 23-year-old woman was attacked and raped while walking home.

Mateta was arrested on December 9, 2019, through forensic evidence linking him to the first rape. The two cases were later consolidated, and the De Aar Regional Court sentenced him to 25 years for the first rape and 15 years for the second. In addition, Mateta’s name has been entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The district commissioner for Pixley ka Seme, Major-General Nomana Mtukushe, commended Detective Warrant Officer Melanie Oliphant and Sergeant Ilse Fan from the De Aar SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for their outstanding investigative work.

She further praised their close collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority, which ensured that justice was served and that the sexual predator is now safely behind bars.
