Northern Cape SAPS celebrates Heritage Day in Kimberley

The Heritage Day event began with a cultural walk from Seochwareng Road to the Pick 'n Pay Circle in Galeshewe, showcasing South Africa’s diverse traditions.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape celebrated Heritage Day under the theme “Reimagine Our Heritage Institutions for a New Era.” Major General Johnny Besnaar, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, represented the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola. Also present were Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, and SAPS Provincial Heads.

The event began with a cultural walk from Seochwareng Road to the Pick 'n Pay Circle in Galeshewe, showcasing South Africa’s diverse traditions. Major General Luntu Ngubelanga delivered the welcoming address, and Brigadier Irene Kopeledi outlined the purpose of the celebration.

Cultural performances included traditional dancing, poetry, and singing by Platfontein !Xunkwesa Combined School, Tetlano High School, the Department of Correctional Services, Polmusca, and the SAPS Band.

In his keynote address, Major General Besnaar emphasised unity through heritage: “As we celebrate our heritage and the rich diversity that defines us, we honour our dedicated officers, support staff, and community partners for embracing our cultural legacy. Your commitment to preserving our history and promoting unity is truly commendable.

"As we reflect on our past, let us recommit to building a brighter future for all. May our collective efforts foster a safer, more inclusive society as we continue to uphold the values of our great nation and strive for excellence in policing.”

Certificates and tokens of appreciation were handed to participating bands, choirs, schools, and sponsors. Brigadier Nicholas Mtongana expressed gratitude to all role players, stating, “Our heritage celebrations must inspire us to serve our rainbow nation with pride and distinction.”

The event was supported by the Department of Correctional Services, the South African Police Union (SAPU), and Assupol.
