WITH theft from and out of motor vehicles on the rise in the Northern Cape, the police have issued a strong warning to motorists to take extra care, particularly as the festive season approaches.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said criminals are targeting vehicles parked at shopping centres, guest houses, holiday destinations, social gatherings, homes and other public places, often preying on lapses in security.
The police have reminded motorists that leaving firearms inside vehicles is not only dangerous but illegal, and that valuables such as laptops, handbags, shopping bags, cameras and cash should never be left in plain sight. These should be locked in the boot, where they are hidden from view.
Drivers are also urged to keep doors locked and windows closed at all times, including when driving in town, and to avoid using cellular phones without a hands-free kit, as this can attract opportunistic criminals.
Incidents have been reported where suspects distract motorists by pretending to point out a flat tyre, only to snatch items from inside the car. Authorities are urging drivers to remain alert to such ploys and to avoid parking in secluded, poorly lit areas at night.
Keys should never be left in the ignition, and owners of vehicles with detachable radios are advised to remove the device or its face when leaving a vehicle unattended.
Installing alarms or anti-theft devices can make vehicles less vulnerable, while parking in supervised or well-populated areas is also recommended, rather than in spots where offenders may hide behind bushes or buildings.
“If you see something, say something. Report criminality to your nearest police station or call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or use the MySaps app,” Kock reminded. He assured the public that all information received would be treated confidentially.
