AN 18-YEAR-old pedestrian was killed when he was reportedly run over by a mining truck in Postmasburg.
SAPS Northern Cape spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the Postmasburg police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after an empty manganese truck reportedly collided with the teen
“The accident occurred on the road near Jimbo’s in Postmasburg on September 10 at about 6.30pm. The male truck driver sustained no injuries, however, the pedestrian died on the scene,” Kock stated.
He requested that anyone with information contact Detective Sergeant Maketa on 078 889 9663, call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS app.
“All information will be treated confidentially. The investigation continues,” Kock added.
EFF provincial chairperson Shadrack Tlhaole said this was the second fatality in the Tsantsabane area.
“We are saddened and infuriated that two young people have died under similar circumstances in the same area. Two families have lost loved ones in senseless accidents. This is not an isolated incident but a direct result of the reckless and unregulated heavy-duty truck industry in Postmasburg and the greater Tsantsabane region. The lives of our children and community are at constant risk when road safety regulations are blatantly bypassed.”
He called for stricter traffic controls, a reduction in the speed limit, regulated truck routes and designated operating hours to safeguard residents.
“Compensation should be paid to the bereaved families for losing their children,” he added. “Local and provincial authorities should be brought to book for failing to protect communities. The blood of our children cannot be treated as collateral damage in the name of profits and logistical convenience.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and stand together with the Postmasburg community in calling for justice and accountability.”
