A KIMBERLEY high school pupil was placed on precautionary suspension this week after he was arrested on charges of sexual assault and attempted rape of a fellow pupil at the school hostel on September 7.

A family friend indicated that the victim sustained injuries, including a ruptured testicle, and required medical attention.

“The doctor informed him that he will not be able to have children as a result of the injury,” the family friend claimed.

The mother of the pupil, who resides in the Western Cape, requested the head of the Northern Cape Department of Education to intervene on September 11. She said her son and the alleged perpetrator were still expected to attend the same classes and reside in the same hostel following the alleged incident.

She further indicated that her son had been severely traumatised and was being mocked by fellow pupils. She believed that no immediate steps were taken against the suspect because he was celebrated by the school for his achievements.

SAPS Northern Cape spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock confirmed that an 18-year-old male pupil was arrested on September 15 at around 4pm in Kimberley.

“The Kimberley SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit is investigating a sexual assault case,” said Kock.

“It is alleged that on September 7, at about 3am, the 17-year-old male complainant wanted to exit the toilet at the high school hostel when he was accosted by an 18-year-old male. The male attempted to rape the victim. Both the alleged suspect and the victim are scholars at the school and reside at the hostel.”

Kock requested anyone with information to contact Detective Constable Siyabulela Mtshugwana on 053 838 4244, call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS app.

“All information will be treated confidentially. The investigation continues,” he added.

Northern Cape Department of Education spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe said the matter was under investigation and also being processed through the appropriate legal channels in court.

“In the interim, both pupils have been separated and are not in contact with one another, to ensure that they are able to write their examinations without further distress,” said Van der Merwe.

He added that the alleged perpetrator was placed on precautionary suspension on September 16 pending an investigation and internal disciplinary proceedings that are under way.

“Both learners are currently receiving counselling support. It is important to note that the statements provided by the learners differ significantly, and efforts are ongoing to establish the facts surrounding the incident. One of the pupils sustained serious injuries; however, his condition is currently stable, though he continues to experience significant pain.”

Van der Merwe said that the department’s district office was providing the necessary support to both pupils and the school to ensure a thorough and timely resolution.

“We remain committed to minimising any negative impact on the learners’ academic progress and well-being. We urge the public to allow due process to take its course and to respect the privacy and dignity of those involved,” he concluded.
