Representatives of the Griqua community gathered at the Warrenton Cultural Village in the Northern Cape from September 5-7 to celebrate their historic heritage as part of Heritage Month activities.

Leaders from various across the country came together to adopt a legal framework to govern the Griqua people.

The event, managed by Hendrik Sesear and his team of 25 years, was a historic celebration of Griqua heritage with a mission to "set the record straight" during Heritage Month.

Leaders from Gauteng and all provinces came together to celebrate Griqua heritage and make history through formal documentation. At the heart of the event, the Griqua Traditional and Authority Council, led by HRM Adam Kok V, adopted a ‘Constitution’ – a first for the community.

The gathering highlighted leadership, community development, and cultural preservation, with discussions on laws and customs forming a key part of the agenda.

Despite a shoestring budget and limited resources, the event was a success, thanks to the determination of the leaders and the support of fund-raising efforts.

The celebration also marked HRM Adam Kok V’s birthday, underscoring his leadership and legacy. Gratitude was expressed to all who contributed, and a follow-up event is planned for next year’s Heritage Month.

Through this historic gathering, the rich heritage of the Griqua people was revitalised, emphasising unity and a shared purpose.
