The South African Policing Union (Sapu) in the Northern Cape has welcomed efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS) management to advertise and initiate the process of filling critical vacant posts within the province.

Sapu provincial secretary Sabata Tshabedi noted that many police stations and units in the Northern Cape were operating under severe strain due to long-standing staff shortages.

"These vacancies have negatively impacted crime prevention, investigations and overall policing effectiveness. We commends SAPS management for taking steps to address this issue and encourages continued efforts to strengthen policing capacity across the province. This move aligns with Sapu's long-standing call for the urgent filling of these posts to improve service delivery, boost morale, and enhance operational effectiveness in policing."

He urged that only qualified and experienced individuals should be considered for appointment. "The shortlisting and appointment processes must be based solely on merit, affording equal opportunity to all eligible applicants regardless of background or affiliation.

"Sapu will closely monitor the recruitment process and will raise concerns if any irregularities are observed. The union remains committed to supporting efforts that improve working conditions, ensure proper staffing, and enhance policing outcomes in the province. A transparent and fair recruitment process is believed to be in the interest of SAPS employees and critical to restoring public trust:" Tshabedi said.
