In the heart of the Northern Cape's ZF Mgcawu District, a beacon of hope is shining bright for aspiring educators. Aaliyah Selborne, a 19-year-old from Kenhardt, is one of the lucky recipients of a community bursary programme that's giving her the opportunity to pursue her dreams of becoming a teacher.

Growing up in a family of dedicated educators, Aaliyah's passion for teaching was ignited at a young age. Her grandmother and aunts, who have been in the profession for over 20 years, inspired her to follow in their footsteps. Now, Aaliyah is studying for a Bachelor of Education (Intermediate Phase) through the University of South Africa, with the support of the Aries Solar Power bursary programme.

The programme has been a game-changer for Aaliyah, covering not only her tuition fees but also book allowances, travel, and accommodation costs, as well as providing a stipend for day-to-day expenses. "The bursary has eased any financial burden, but most importantly, it has allowed me to follow in my family's footsteps," Aaliyah says with gratitude.

Inspiring the next generation

Aaliyah's vision for the future is clear: she wants to return to her hometown and make a difference in the lives of young learners. "I look forward to being a passionate educator, providing a strong foundation of educational support in my hometown," she shares. "I attended both Kenhardt Primary School and Kenhardt High School, and I'd love to see myself back in those classrooms, inspiring the next generation."

The Aries Solar Power bursary programme has been supporting local youth like Aaliyah for over five years, investing in their educational journeys and shaping a brighter future for families in the Kenhardt area. As Aaliyah's story shows, with the right support and opportunities, young people can achieve their dreams and give back to their communities in meaningful ways.

For Harrisinah Theka, Economic Development Manager at Aries Solar Power, Aaliyah's story is a testament to the programme's impact. "We are encouraged to see young, passionate students like Aaliyah taking the initiative to apply for bursary funding," she comments.

As the programme continues to grow and support more students, it's clear that the future of education in Namakwa is looking brighter than ever.
