Early childhood development (ECD) centres play an important role in the development of young children. Key for stimulating physical growth, cognitive functions, and social skills, ECDs are integral in not only establishing school readiness in children but also moulding an affinity towards education.

In a display of community commitment, Kumba Iron Ore has completed refurbishments at the Mpepe Thari Day Care centre in Siyathemba, enhancing the learning environment for young children.

The upgrades included improvements to the children's play area and the installation of a water back-up system, ensuring uninterrupted access to essential services.

The initiative aligns with Kumba's Sustainable Mining Plan, which prioritises excellent education and training for children in host communities.

Sustainability integration and LADAR specialist at Kumba Iron Ore, Itumeleng Lute, emphasised Kumba’s commitment towards local education.

“The Mpepe Thari Day Care centre is an important part of this community. As an organisation that values education, being able to contribute to the success of this ECD centre is in line with our Sustainable Mining Plan, which envisions excellent education and training for children in our host communities.

"I’m particularly excited about the water back system that we’ve installed at the day care. It will put both the educators and parents at ease knowing that the children are in an environment where their sanitary needs will not impact their learning.

"We trust in the community and the ECD centre to maintain these facilities for the benefit of their children,” said Lute.

Lena Mosang, principal at Mpepe Thari Day Care, expressed gratitude for Kumba's contribution, highlighting the significant impact on the centre's operations. "We often struggle with water supply at the day care, and the kids would suffer," she said.

"These refurbishments will help a great deal in making sure that the overall education experience is enjoyable for the learners."
