Ten learners from Kuruman Primary School proudly represented the Northern Cape at the prestigious BRICS Summer School Learner Day, held on 2 September 2025 at the University of Johannesburg Business School.
Kuruman Primary stood out as the only primary school from the Northern Cape selected to attend the event, an achievement made even more remarkable considering that more than 4,000 applications were received from across the country.
Accompanied by Ms Pelonomi Itumeleng, a National Finalist for Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning, and Mr Mauricio Scharneck, a National Finalist in Mathematics-GET, the learners were given a unique opportunity to engage in a programme designed to broaden their horizons and prepare them for global citizenship.
The day featured keynote addresses by prominent speakers, workshops focusing on innovation and sustainable development, and cultural exchange sessions. Learners also had the honour of engaging directly with the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Nomalungelo Gina, who encouraged them to embrace leadership and learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms Itumeleng said, “It is so important for schools to be flexible enough to allow for this level of interaction. We are blessed to have the school management that supports our initiatives.”
The learners gained valuable insights into leadership, critical thinking, and international collaboration while also gaining exposure to the goals of BRICS education initiatives. Their participation not only highlighted their personal growth but also showcased the pride and potential of the Northern Cape.
