A 60-year-old accused, Donavon Keith Davids, was convicted in the Kimberley Serious Commercial Crimes Court on August 26 on charges of fraud.
Hawks Northern Cape spokesperson Warrant Officer Nomthandazo Mnisi said the accused, Davids and his co-accused, Desmond Appie, posed as lawyers and conveyancers with the intention of receiving funds for the sale of a house.
She said the complainant was referred to DD Legal to initiate the process of purchasing a house.
"An amount of R40,000 was made into David's bank account, although the transfer of the house did not materialise. The case was then reported to the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit for further investigation. Investigation revealed that the seller was not the lawful owner of the property."
Mnisi stated that Davids was expected to be sentenced on September 12 while the case against Appie was continuing.
