The 2025 Motsepe Schools Games brought excitement, determination and quality football to Kimberley as hundreds of learners competed across three age divisions under the Sol Plaatje school football structure.

This year’s competition featured 32 boys’ Under-19 schools, 38 boys’ Under-13 schools and eight girls’ Under-13 schools, all battling it out for the honour of representing Sol Plaatje at the next stage of the competition in Warrenton.

Matches kicked off with group stages, leading to a series of thrilling knockouts before three champions were crowned in the finals last week.

In the high school boys’ Under-19 final, Emang Mmogo edged Emmanuel High School 2-1 in a tense encounter played at Technical High School on Wednesday, August 20. The game showcased the depth of talent in local school football, with Emang Mmogo lifting the trophy after a hard-fought battle.

Plenty of talent in our schools

All three winners will now represent Sol Plaatje schools in Warrenton this coming Friday at the municipal knockout stage.

Reflecting on the competition, Sol Plaatje Local Football Association school football coordinator Mbulelo Jack praised the effort of all participants and the support received from the local football community. “This tournament continues to show how much talent exists in our schools.

"Congratulations to all the winners, and best of luck to them as they carry our flag forward in Warrenton," he said.

Jack, who is also the coach of Kevin Nkoane Primary School, also expressed gratitude to the organisers and new leadership. “We give a big thanks to the Sol Plaatje Local Football Association for availing the grounds and supporting school football. With the new chairman of the Sol Plaatje Local Football Association, Collin Bosman, doors have been opened for every football structure to participate.

"As a coach, it is a pleasure for my school to once again represent Kimberley, and I must also congratulate the other schools that will join us in Warrenton.”

With the quality of football on display and strong backing from the community, the Motsepe Schools Games have once again proven to be a cornerstone of youth football development in the Northern Cape.
