A Calvinia accused pleaded guilty to raping a girl who fell pregnant with his child

A man has been handed a suspended sentence after pleading guilty in the Calvinia regional court to raping a minor who fell pregnant with his child.

SAPS Northern Cape spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the Calvinia Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit was alerted on September 12 2024 by a Department of Health employee about the pregnancy of a 15-year-old girl in Calvinia.

"Constable Anthony Willemse of the Calvinia FCS, attended to the complaint and immediately initiated an investigation. The investigation revealed that the sexual offences occurred between  April 1 2023 and September 12 2024, when the pregnancy was discovered." 

He stated that the during questioning, the accused admitted to being the father of the unborn child and confirmed that he had engaged in a sexual relationship with the girl.

"The accused pleaded guilty and was convicted of statutory rape and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years.

"The SAPS in the Northern Cape remains resolute in its fight against crimes targeting women and children. The Office of the Provincial Commissioner commended Detective Constable Anthony Willemse of the Calvinia FCS for his diligence, which led to a successful conviction, " Shemane added.
