THE NORTHERN Cape Department of Roads and Public Works has pledged to pay Sol Plaatje Municipality R95 million to settle outstanding rates, taxes, and service charges on all provincial government buildings within the municipal district.

Department spokesperson Zandisile Luphahla said the agreement would unlock much-needed funds for the municipality to offset its debt to Eskom and ensure the delivery of services.

"The agreement, which follows months of engagement with the MEC for Finance, will see the department processing payments within seven days. This forms part of a broader plan to clear municipal accounts, address shortfalls in road maintenance and secure additional funding through the adjustment budget,” said Luphahla.

"This agreement has been hailed as a model that other provinces can learn from, demonstrating effective collaboration between provincial departments and local municipalities in addressing financial obligations and supporting community service delivery.”

MEC for Roads and Public Works Fufe Makatong said the agreement aligned with the Government Immovable Asset Management Act (GIAMA) and strengthened co-operation between provincial and local government.

“This milestone allows us to move forward with a joint plan to support Sol Plaatje’s financial recovery while ensuring essential services continue,” she said.

Sol Plaatje executive mayor Martha Bartlett welcomed the agreement as a breakthrough for the municipality, citing its dire financial situation and the urgent need for resources to maintain clean, safe, and functional public spaces.
