Sassa card loan repayment scam – 61-year-old woman arrested

A 61-year-old woman was arrested in Groblershoop for allegedly running a Sassa card loan repayment scam, involving multiple Sassa and bank cards.

A 61-year-old woman was arrested by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Groblershoop on Tuesday, August 5 2025, for allegedly running a Sassa card loan repayment scam.

The suspect was found in possession of multiple Sassa and bank cards.

According to reports, intelligence was received about a woman who allegedly used Sassa cards for loan repayments and would withdraw cash from different accounts during payouts. The suspect was monitored and was apprehended at an ATM with cash and cards in her possession.

The suspect has been charged under the National Credit Act and fraud and is expected to appear in court soon. The arrest was made possible by the combined efforts of SAPS's Border Police, K9, and Crime Intelligence units.

The incident highlights the need for vigilance and caution when dealing with financial transactions, especially those involving Sassa grants.

The police are urging anyone with information about similar scams to come forward, either by calling the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or by using the MySAPS app, downloadable on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for anonymous tip-offs.
