Running a small business is demanding at the best of times. Between juggling daily tasks, managing customers, and keeping costs under control, there’s often little space left for growth – let alone dreaming bigger.
For many entrepreneurs, especially women in small towns, limited resources and access to funding can make progress feel just out of reach. But for Douglas salon owner Doreen Steenkamp, that changed thanks to the All Women-in-Business Empowerment Initiative.
The initiative, funded by Boikanyo Solar, empowers women between the ages of 18 and 59 by providing business tools and support, and aims to help participants succeed in the formal economy.
Steenkamp's salon, Salon Doreen, has been upgraded with new tools and equipment, including a hair cleansing basin, industrial dryers, manicure tables, salon chairs, and signage. This support has enabled her to expand her services quite impressively.
“Before receiving this support, I was only offering basic services such as washes and blowouts,” said Doreen. “Now with the new setup and equipment, I can offer wig installations, restorations, maintenance, and even manicures and pedicures.”
Boikanyo Solar’s Social Performance Practitioner, Lesego Mosiane, praised Steenkamp’s dedication to growing her business and making the most of the programme.
“Doreen has shown great commitment throughout the programme, and these assets will allow her to increase revenue and provide a better experience for her clients,” said Mosiane. “We will continue to monitor her growth, and we wish her every success.”
With her upgraded salon now fully equipped, Steenkamp says she’s ready to grow her business further and offer even more to her community.
