KUMBA Iron Ore's Zimele programme is making a significant impact in the Northern Cape by equipping small businesses with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive. One beneficiary of the programme is Moleleki Khofu, who owns a tyre and vehicle repair business.

Through Zimele's General Energy programme, Khofu gained valuable insights into managing cash flow, pricing correctly, and planning for growth. The programme, which includes a virtual mini-master class on energy savings and needs-based support for operational improvements, has enabled Khofu to transform his business and employ three people.

According to Larisha Naidoo, head of Zimele, the programme aims to unlock the ingenuity that already exists in communities and equip entrepreneurs with the tools to build sustainable businesses and uplift others.

The programme has been instrumental in helping Khofu's business grow, and he now plans to hire more staff and run a bursary programme for community members and deserving students.

The Zimele programme has several benefits for small businesses, including:

  • Providing entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.
  • Equipping businesses with the skills to manage cash flow, price correctly, and plan for growth.
  • Offering mentorship and advisory services to support business growth.
  • Creating employment opportunities and contributing to the local economy.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in the local economy, contributing around 34% to the national GDP and employing between 50% and 60% of the workforce. The Zimele programme is helping to support the growth of SMEs, which is essential for driving innovation, creating jobs, and stimulating economic growth.

By providing small businesses with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed, the programme is making a positive impact and contributing to economic development.
