A SENIOR football official appeared in the Barkly West Magistrate’s Court on July 23 on charges of domestic violence after he allegedly assaulted his wife.

SAPS Northern Cape spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the police were investigating two cases of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), following the alleged assault of a woman aged between 30 and 35 by her husband in Barkly West on July 20.

He indicated that a domestic violence matter that was withdrawn in 2024 had been placed back on the court roll following the alleged incident that took place over the weekend.

“Police investigations are continuing,” said Sam.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane added that the accused was arrested on July 22 after charges were opened by his wife.

“He was charged with assault GBH dating back to 2024 in terms of the Domestic Violence Act and a second charge of malicious injury to property after a municipality's laptop was damaged in 2024,” said Senokoatsane.

He added that, in the most recent charge, the accused was again charged with assault GBH under the Domestic Violence Act. The alleged incident took place at the accused’s home in Barkly West.

Senokoatsane indicated that, during the alleged 2024 incident, the complainant sustained injuries to her right eye, mouth, and soft tissue.

“In the latest [alleged] incident, she experienced tenderness on the right side of her face and neck, although there were no open wounds. According to the complainant, there was a history of physical abuse.”

He stated that the accused would remain in custody until a formal bail application scheduled for Monday, July 28.
