A VIDEO circulating on social media has highlighted the growing concern of smash-and-grab crimes in South Africa, particularly at intersections.

The footage shows a thief reaching into a car and stealing a cellphone while the driver is stopped at an intersection.

This incident has sparked renewed calls for motorists to be vigilant and take proactive steps to protect themselves and their belongings. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged drivers to always lock their doors, keep valuables out of sight, and remain alert for suspicious activity.

SAPS in the Northern Cape has also expressed concern over the rising number of smash-and-grab incidents in the province. To combat this, the police are urging motorists to take proactive steps to prevent such crimes. Here are some safety tips to protect yourself and your belongings:

Safety while driving

  • Always lock your doors and close all windows, even when driving. Thieves often steal valuables by opening unlocked doors or breaking windows, especially at traffic lights or in slow-moving traffic.
  • Store items like handbags and electronics in the boot or behind the seat if you're driving a bakkie. Avoid leaving valuables in plain sight.
  • Remain watchful for suspicious individuals, particularly at intersections. Report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.

Safety at intersections

  • When approaching a red traffic light at night, reduce speed to reach the intersection as the light turns green, minimising the need to stop.
  • Be cautious of people standing near intersections who may use distraction tactics to get you to lower your guard.

To protect yourself and your vehicle from potential threats, it's essential to take a few precautions. When parking, avoid secluded areas and opt for attended or secure parking lots whenever possible. At night, make sure to park in well-lit areas to minimise the risk of criminal activity.

While driving or stopped, stay aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep an eye out for suspicious individuals or activity, and never leave children unattended in a vehicle, even briefly. This not only ensures their safety but also prevents potential opportunities for thieves.

If you witness or experience any criminal activity, report it immediately to the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS App. Your prompt action can help prevent further incidents and support the authorities in maintaining safety and security in your community.
