THE SOUTH African Police Service's Operation Vala Umgodi has made significant strides in combating illegal mining activities in the Northern Cape. On Sunday, July 20, a joint operation between the proactive and combat teams of Operation Vala Umgodi and a private mine security company led to the arrest of five males aged between 25 and 38 years old.

The operation was sparked by intelligence received about individuals suspected to be in possession of unpolished diamonds in the Nuttabooi area. A search was conducted, resulting in the recovery and confiscation of unpolished diamonds. Four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unpolished diamonds.

In a separate incident, a 38-year-old man was arrested in the Kleinzee area for being in possession of suspected diamond-bearing gravel, which was subsequently confiscated. The suspect was reportedly involved in illegal mining activities at a mine.

All suspects are expected to appear in the Port Nolloth Magistrate's Court soon. Investigations are ongoing, and Operation Vala Umgodi vows to continue dismantling illegal mining operations and confiscating mining implements during these disruptive operations.

The SAPS urges members of the public to report any suspicious or criminal activities by using the MySAPS app or calling the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111.

This operation is part of the SAPS's efforts to crack down on illegal mining, which has seen significant progress with over 200 suspects arrested nationwide.
