A BIZARRE encounter inside a Galeshewe bottle store involving a packet of condoms spiralled into tragedy — ending with a 10-year prison sentence for a young man convicted of murder.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, the Galeshewe Regional Court has sentenced 21-year-old Setshaba Mmetseng to a decade behind bars for the fatal stabbing of 27-year-old Kyle Marumo, following an altercation that began under unusual and unnecessary circumstances.
The incident occurred on April 21, 2024, when tensions flared during a routine visit to a local liquor store. According to court testimony, Mmetseng's mother took a packet of condoms from the store counter and attempted to hide it in the back pocket of the unsuspecting victim. When the item fell, Marumo reportedly picked it up and returned it to her — a gesture that offended Mmetseng.
What began as an awkward moment escalated into an altercation, then turned deadly when Mmetseng left the store, lay in wait, and attacked Marumo outside with a self-fashioned knife. The brutal assault claimed Marumo’s life.
The court found Mmetseng guilty of murder and handed down a 10-year direct imprisonment sentence. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The conviction followed a thorough investigation led by Detective Sergeant Isaac Motladi, helping to deliver a measure of justice after a senseless act of violence.
Sergeant Sam urged residents to play an active role in reporting criminal activity. Anonymous tips can be submitted via the MySAPS app or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
