THE ESKOM Expo for Young Scientists is set to host its regional science fair in Kimberley on August 16 at the Sol Plaatje University.

The event aims to provide a platform for school learners to showcase their innovative ideas, scientific research, and problem-solving skills.

More than 6,000 projects will be showcased this year, with participants having been pre-selected after taking part in various expo activities and district expos.

Over 17,500 learners presented their research projects at school and district expos, with the selected participants now competing at the regional level.

According to Mologadi Motshele, acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, "By cultivating interest and excellence in STEMI (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation) from an early age, the Eskom Expo not only develops individual potential but also contributes to the broader goals of economic growth, innovation, and social equity."

The regional science fairs will offer learners the opportunity to engage with fellow learners, educators, and professionals from various STEMI fields, building their critical thinking, research, and communication skills.

Participants will also compete for prestigious awards, including:

  • Best Female Project
  • Best Innovation Project
  • Best Energy Project
  • Best Development Project

The regional science fair will take place in Kimberley on August 16 at the Sol Plaatje University, South Campus, Multi-Purpose Hall.

The top projects will be showcased at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) at the Emperors Palace Conference Centre in Kempton Park from October 6 to 10.

ISF participants will compete for prizes, bursaries, opportunities, and a chance to showcase their projects at international science fairs in the United States, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
