When you cancel your wellness walk.

ROODEPAN residents hoping to stretch their legs, check their vitals, and grab some health advice this week will have to hit pause — the much-anticipated Health & Wellness Walk has been abruptly cancelled.
The event, which was due to take place on Wednesday, July 9, was promoted as a fun and free opportunity for the community to take charge of their health — complete with aerobics, blood pressure and HIV screenings, wellness education, and a chance to walk alongside the Northern Cape Health MEC Maruping Lekwene.
Instead, a flat-footed media alert on Monday announced that the walk had been cancelled. No reason was given, and no alternative date has been offered.
For an event pitched as part of the department’s broader campaign to bring health services directly to communities, its sudden disappearance from the calendar has left more than a few people scratching their heads.
The Department of Health had previously touted its growing “ideal clinic” status and innovations like Collect&Go smart lockers and the 1.1 Million HIV campaign — all pointing to a push for more proactive, people-centred service.
But for now, it seems Roodepan’s turn at a wellness boost will have to wait.
The DFA has reached out to the Department of Health to enquire whether the event will be rescheduled or if a statement will be issued explaining the cancellation. At the time of publication, no further details had been provided.
So, if you were planning to lace up your takkies and break a sweat with the MEC this Wednesday … maybe take a solo walk instead.
At least that way, the only thing likely to get cancelled is your afternoon nap.
