THE SOUTH African Policing Union (Sapu) has expressed shock following the fatal shooting of an off-duty police officer during a SAPS response to a domestic violence complaint in Nababeep, near Springbok, on July 3.
Sapu provincial secretary Sabata Ephraim Tshabedi said the incident reportedly occurred when the off-duty officer allegedly threatened and pointed his firearm at his colleagues.
"While managing the threat to protect lives, the on-duty officers responded, and the off-duty officer was fatally shot,” said Tshabedi.
"It is truly devastating when incidents of this nature occur within our ranks, where those sworn to protect and serve are left with impossible decisions under difficult and emotionally charged circumstances."
He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this painful time. No words can fully express the sense of loss, and we stand in solidarity with them as they navigate through this tragic period."
Tshabedi urged SAPS management in the Northern Cape to immediately provide trauma debriefing and psychological support to all members of the station, particularly those directly involved in the incident.
"These members now carry an emotional burden that requires professional assistance and compassionate support from SAPS leadership."
He emphasised that police officers work in high-pressure environments.
"This incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need to strengthen internal support mechanisms within SAPS. It is crucial that every member, regardless of rank or duty status, must have full access to Employee Health and Wellness programmes, mental health services, counselling, and early intervention programmes.
“We cannot ignore the signs of distress, which may not always be immediately visible."
